| The Waterman Exception was
named the 2006 Pen of the
Year in the Pen World
International Reader’s Choice
Awards. But let’s start at the
beginning.
In New York, in 1883, Lewis
Edson Waterman lost an
important contract due to a
temperamental pen, so he
created the forefather of the
modern fountain pen called
the Regular. At the urging of a
friend, in 1884 he advertised
in a magazine and was soon
swamped with orders leading
to the opening of the first
proper factory, the production
of 200 pens, and the founding
of the Ideal Pen Company.
Over the next several years
business continues to expand
and in 1888 Lewis renames
the enterprise L. E. Waterman
Company.
Today, the Waterman brand is
one of the most recognized in
the world.
Amoungst many landmark
introductions would be the
Edson in 1992, the Carene in
1997, and the Charleston in
2001. |
