| Tree Ring Pens are hand-
crafted by forest ecologist
Dave Wager from trees
thinned from an unnaturally
dense forest. Such harvesting
reduces the likelihood of
catastrophic fire, protects old
growth trees, and restores the
forest to a natural condition.
Non-lethal low intensity
fires occurred more
frequently prior to European
settlement. With low-intensity
fire, smaller trees are killed
and forests become
dominated by large fire
resistant trees. After a
century of fire suppression,
portions of the last remaining
old-growth forests are at risk
due to the unnaturally dense
understory conditions that
exacerbate catastrophic fire
or insect and disease related
mortality. Fire thinning
can emulate the effects of low
intensity fire. Tree Ring Pens
utilize low value trees from
thinning projects, raise
awareness, and help fund the
restoration of old-growth
forests. A generous
percentage of profits is
donated to organizations
working to restore North
America's old growth forests. |
